Base Wallet Guide: Send, Receive and Bridge ETH on Base

Updated , 8 minute read

A Base wallet holds ETH, USDC and other tokens on Base, the Ethereum layer 2 incubated by Coinbase. Base uses your normal 0x Ethereum address and charges fees in ETH, and it has no token of its own for gas. The safest habits are choosing Base as the network when you withdraw from an exchange, keeping a little ETH for fees, and using a fast bridge if you need funds back on Ethereum quickly.

What is Base and why do so many people use it?

Base is an Ethereum layer 2 network launched by Coinbase in 2023. It started as one of the biggest OP Stack chains and a founding member of the Superchain. In 2026 Base moved to its own codebase, called base/base and built on open-source parts such as Reth, and set up its own upgrade path outside the Superchain's shared governance. It still follows the familiar OP Stack design, so wallets and apps keep working as before.

Base is popular because it sits next to one of the largest exchanges. Coinbase users can move ETH and USDC onto Base cheaply, and consumer apps, social apps, creator coins and payment tools have grown up around that flow. It is also one of the busiest places for USDC, which Circle issues natively on Base. Base has said it is exploring a network token, but none exists today, so fees are paid in ETH.

Security-wise, Base is a rollup: all transaction data is posted to Ethereum, and its state is checked by proofs that anyone can verify on Ethereum. Coinbase still runs the only sequencer, which orders transactions, and a multisig shared with an independent Security Council can upgrade the contracts. Trackers such as L2BEAT rate Base Stage 1, meaning users can exit even if the operator misbehaves, though some trust in the governance setup remains.

Your Base address is your Ethereum address

Base uses the same accounts as Ethereum. Your address is a 0x address derived from your recovery phrase, and Keylo shows the identical address under Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum and every other EVM network. You do not need to activate the account or keep a minimum balance, and there is no memo or tag to add when receiving from an exchange.

The address being the same everywhere is convenient, but it also means a sender can pick the wrong network without any error. A Coinbase withdrawal sent on Ethereum instead of Base still arrives at your address, only on Ethereum mainnet. Nothing is lost, you just see it under Ethereum in Keylo and pay higher fees to use it there or to bridge it over.

Create a Base wallet in Keylo

  1. 1

Visit the Keylo sign-up page in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or any modern browser.

  2. 2

Enter your name, email, phone and password, then verify your email address.

  3. 3

Keylo creates your wallet in the browser. The 12-word recovery phrase is encrypted locally with your password, and Keylo's servers only keep the encrypted copy.

  4. 4

Reveal and write down your recovery phrase in Settings. It is optional, but without it a forgotten password means a lost wallet.

  5. 5

Select Base in the network list. Your 0x address and balances appear right away.

How to receive ETH or USDC on Base from Coinbase or another exchange

  1. 1

Open Base in Keylo and tap the asset you are expecting, such as ETH or USDC.

  2. 2

Tap Receive. Copy the address or show the QR code; Keylo labels it Base so you know which network it belongs to.

  3. 3

In Coinbase or another exchange, start a withdrawal, paste the address and set the network to Base.

  4. 4

Double-check the first and last few characters of the address, then submit.

  5. 5

The deposit usually shows in Activity within a minute once the exchange broadcasts it.

How to send ETH on Base

  1. 1

Open Base in Keylo and pick ETH or the token you want to send.

  2. 2

Paste the recipient's 0x address or scan their QR code. Keylo checks the checksum and warns you about contract addresses.

  3. 3

Enter the amount or tap Max; Keylo reserves what the fee needs.

  4. 4

Choose a fee speed. Base blocks are two seconds apart, and Flashblocks give apps preconfirmations in about 200 milliseconds, so normal speed is usually enough.

  5. 5

Review the summary with the network fee and exact amount, then confirm. Signing happens in your browser.

How Base fees are calculated

Each Base transaction pays an L2 execution fee and an L1 data fee, both in ETH. The execution fee uses EIP-1559: a base fee that moves with demand plus a small priority tip. The data fee pays for publishing your compressed transaction to Ethereum as blob data. A plain transfer usually costs a fraction of a cent, while complex DeFi calls cost more because they carry more data and use more gas.

Base fees can spike briefly during very popular token launches or mints, when the base fee climbs block by block. If you are not in a hurry, waiting a few minutes often brings fees back down. Keylo shows the total network fee before you confirm and adds nothing on top of normal sends; that fee goes to the network, not to Keylo.

Speed and cost are linked on Base. Flashblocks split each two-second block into smaller slices so apps can show a result almost instantly, but final inclusion still follows the regular block and its fee. Paying the fast speed raises your priority tip; it helps during busy minutes and rarely matters otherwise. A failed transaction still pays for the gas it used, so check balances before retrying.

Tokens on Base: USDC, EURC and the rest

Base is an ERC-20 network, and Keylo can show and send its tokens. Circle issues USDC and its euro stablecoin EURC natively on Base, so you rarely need bridged versions. You will also see a huge number of community tokens and creator coins, because launching a token on Base is cheap. That is exactly why fake versions of popular tokens are common.

Before buying or accepting a token, check its contract address on Basescan or the project's official site. A token named USDC that is not Circle's contract is not worth a dollar. Unsolicited tokens that appear in your wallet are often bait that leads to a phishing site asking you to approve or sign something. Leave them alone.

Coinbase also issues cbBTC, a Bitcoin-backed token, on Base. It behaves like any ERC-20 and is handy for using Bitcoin value in Base apps, but it is not native BTC. Sending cbBTC to a Bitcoin address is impossible, and an exchange will only credit it if it supports cbBTC deposits on Base specifically.

Swap and bridge on Base, and how withdrawals to Ethereum work in 2026

Keylo supports swaps and bridges on Base through LI.FI, which compares decentralized exchanges and audited bridges, and THORChain for native cross-chain swaps with assets like BTC. Every quote lists the route, expected output, minimum received and fees, including any small service fee, and you can follow a bridge until it lands. When a cross-chain route cannot complete, the protocol refunds the sending wallet.

Base's canonical bridge has changed. Since the Azul and Beryl upgrades in 2026, Base checks its state with two kinds of proof, a TEE attestation and a ZK proof. A withdrawal backed by both can be finalized on Ethereum after about one day, while one backed by a single proof waits about five days, down from the old seven. You still prove and finalize on Ethereum, which costs mainnet gas. Base no longer runs its own bridge website and points users to third-party bridges, which use liquidity to pay out within minutes.

Sending funds back to Coinbase is often the simplest exit of all. Copy your Coinbase deposit address for the asset, make sure the deposit page lists Base as the network, and send from Keylo on Base. The exchange credits your account once it sees the transaction, and from there you can withdraw to Ethereum or a bank. It skips the bridge entirely.

Practice on Base Sepolia

Turn on testnet mode in Keylo settings to add Base Sepolia. Coinbase's developer platform runs a public faucet for test ETH, so you can practice receiving and sending, compare fee speeds and get comfortable with the review screen before using real money. Test funds have no value and cannot be bridged to mainnet.

Base safety tips

  • Set the network to Base on every exchange withdrawal; the default is often Ethereum.
  • Keep a small amount of ETH on Base for gas, even if you mainly hold USDC.
  • Verify token contracts. Copycat tokens and fake airdrops are everywhere on cheap networks.
  • Be wary of any site promising a Base token airdrop. No official Base token exists yet.
  • Revoke approvals for apps you no longer use, especially meme coin trading sites.
  • Coinbase and Keylo staff will never ask for your recovery phrase. Contact Keylo support only through the app or site.

Frequently asked questions

Does Base have its own token?

Not as of October 2026. Base has said it is exploring a network token, but there is no official token, and all fees are paid in ETH. Any site offering a Base token claim or presale should be treated as a scam until Base announces something on its official channels. Tokens with Base in the name are unrelated projects.

Is my Coinbase account the same as a Base wallet?

No. A Coinbase exchange account is custodial: Coinbase holds the keys and processes withdrawals for you. A Base wallet such as Keylo is self-custodial, so only you control the funds with your password and recovery phrase. You can withdraw from Coinbase to your Keylo Base address by choosing Base as the network.

How long does it take to move ETH from Base to Ethereum?

With a liquidity bridge, usually a few minutes. With Base's canonical bridge, about one day when both the TEE and ZK proofs back the state, or about five days with a single proof, plus time for the prove and finalize steps on Ethereum. Keylo's bridge quotes show the estimated time before you confirm.

Is Base still part of the Optimism Superchain?

Base left the Superchain's shared governance in 2026 and now upgrades on its own schedule with its own base/base software. It still follows the OP Stack specification, so it stays compatible with Ethereum tools. For you as a user nothing changed: same address, ETH for gas, and bridges continue to connect Base with OP Mainnet and other chains.

I sent USDC on Ethereum instead of Base. What now?

Your USDC is safe at the same address on Ethereum. Open Ethereum in Keylo to see it. You can keep it there or bridge it to Base with Keylo's bridge. You will need a little ETH on Ethereum to pay the bridge transaction fee, since USDC cannot pay its own gas.

Why do I need ETH on Base if I only hold USDC?

Every transaction on Base, including a USDC transfer, pays its network fee in ETH. If your Base balance is only USDC, you cannot send it anywhere until you add a little ETH. Withdraw a small amount of ETH from your exchange on the Base network, or bridge some in with Keylo, and keep it as a fee buffer.
