Berachain Wallet: BERA, BGT and Proof of Liquidity Explained

Updated , 8 minute read

A Berachain wallet holds BERA, the gas coin of Berachain, along with HONEY and other tokens on a standard 0x address. Keylo creates that wallet in your browser and signs every transaction locally. Berachain's Proof of Liquidity adds a second token, BGT, that cannot be sent like normal tokens, so understanding the three tokens is the first step to using the chain safely.

What is Berachain?

Berachain is an EVM-identical layer 1 that went live in February 2025. It pairs an unmodified Ethereum execution client with BeaconKit, a consensus layer built on CometBFT, so blocks arrive about every two seconds and are final as soon as they are committed. Anything that runs on Ethereum runs on Berachain without changes, and your wallet sees it as an ordinary EVM network.

What makes it different is Proof of Liquidity (PoL). On most proof-of-stake chains, validators earn new tokens and keep them. On Berachain, validators stake BERA to produce blocks, but the inflationary reward, BGT, is steered to reward vaults where people who supply liquidity to approved apps earn it. The idea is to tie network security to useful activity in DeFi, and to make apps compete for emissions.

Berachain grew out of the Bong Bears NFT community, which explains the bear and honey names throughout the ecosystem. Under the branding it is serious infrastructure: DEXs, lending markets, perpetuals and liquid staking protocols all plug into PoL, and much of the activity you will see revolves around earning or directing BGT.

BERA, BGT and HONEY: the three tokens to know

BERA is the gas and staking token. You need it for every transaction, and it is what Keylo shows as your native balance. BGT (Bera Governance Token) is earned through reward vaults and used for governance and to direct emissions. It is deliberately non-transferable: you cannot send or sell it like an ERC-20. The only way out is to burn it 1:1 for BERA, and that conversion is one-way.

HONEY is Berachain's native stablecoin, minted against approved collateral such as USDC and designed to track the US dollar. It is the base pair for much of the chain's trading. Because BGT cannot move between wallets, any offer to buy, sell or send you BGT is a scam, as is any token calling itself BGT that you can trade freely.

Some protocols do issue transferable tokens that represent BGT they hold and manage on your behalf. Those are ordinary ERC-20 tokens with their own smart-contract and pricing risk, and their value depends entirely on the protocol behind them. They can sit in Keylo like any token, but they are not BGT itself, and you should understand how to redeem them before buying.

If you simply hold BERA in Keylo, you are not taking part in Proof of Liquidity. Staking BERA is how validators join the active set, and earning BGT requires depositing into reward vaults through Berachain apps. Neither happens automatically, so a plain BERA balance earns nothing and carries none of the smart-contract risk that PoL strategies involve.

How Berachain addresses work

Your Berachain address is a standard 0x address, the same one Keylo shows on Ethereum and other EVM networks, derived from your recovery phrase on the default Ethereum path. There is no account activation, no minimum balance and no memo. You can receive BERA and tokens as soon as you share the address.

Because the address is shared across EVM chains, the network you choose is what decides where funds land. BERA exists natively only on Berachain, but bridged or wrapped versions of it, and of HONEY, can appear on other chains. Keylo shows the network name next to every address so you can check you are looking at Berachain before you copy it.

How to create a Berachain wallet with Keylo

Keylo stores only the encrypted wallet and never sees your password, phrase or keys, so it cannot move your BERA or recover a lost phrase. If you already use Berachain through MetaMask or Rabby, you can import that 12- or 24-word phrase and the same first address appears, because Keylo follows the standard Ethereum derivation path.

  1. 1

Open create a wallet in any modern browser. Keylo works on mobile and desktop without an extension.

  2. 2

Fill in your name, email, phone and a strong password, then confirm your email address.

  3. 3

Your browser generates a 12-word recovery phrase and encrypts it with a key derived from your password.

  4. 4

Choose Berachain in the network list to see your BERA balance and 0x address.

  5. 5

Reveal the phrase in Settings after re-entering your password, and write it down offline.

How to receive BERA

Berachain blocks are final as soon as they are committed, so a deposit that appears in Activity is settled. If an exchange says a withdrawal is complete but nothing shows, open the transaction hash in the explorer and check that the network is Berachain mainnet and the recipient is your address.

  1. 1

Open BERA on Berachain and tap Receive.

  2. 2

Copy the 0x address or show the QR code. The Berachain label confirms the network.

  3. 3

When withdrawing from an exchange, choose the Berachain network, not Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain.

  4. 4

Watch Activity for the incoming transaction, which links to the Berachain explorer.

How to send BERA and HONEY

You will not find BGT in the send screen, because the protocol does not allow BGT transfers. If a site tells you to approve or send BGT to unlock a reward, close it. Sending HONEY or other tokens still costs gas in BERA, so keep a small BERA balance even if most of your money sits in stablecoins.

  1. 1

Open BERA, HONEY or another Berachain token and tap Send.

  2. 2

Paste the recipient's 0x address or scan their QR code. Keylo checks the checksum and warns you about contracts.

  3. 3

Enter an amount or use Max.

  4. 4

Choose slow, normal or fast and review the amount and network fee.

  5. 5

Confirm to sign in your browser and broadcast the transaction.

Gas fees on Berachain

Berachain uses Ethereum's EIP-1559 fee model, paid in BERA. Each block has a base fee that moves with demand, plus an optional priority tip for the validator. A simple BERA transfer uses 21,000 gas; swaps, vault deposits and other contract calls use more. Normal transactions cost a small fraction of a BERA.

Keylo's slow, normal and fast options set the tip and the maximum fee you allow. With two-second blocks, the difference is a matter of seconds except during sudden bursts of activity, such as a popular launch. The review screen shows the network fee before you sign, and Keylo adds nothing to it.

Swap or bridge BERA

Keylo supports swaps and bridges on Berachain through LI.FI, which searches DEXs and audited bridges for a route. You can swap BERA for HONEY or USDC on Berachain, or bring ETH and stablecoins in from Ethereum, Arbitrum or Base. The quote shows the route, expected output, minimum received and every fee, including any small Keylo service fee, before you confirm. Details are on swap and bridge.

Bridges usually complete within minutes, and Keylo lets you follow one until it lands. If a route cannot finish, the protocol refunds the sending wallet. For PoL strategies, such as adding liquidity and staking the LP token in a reward vault, you will need the relevant Berachain app and a wallet that can connect to it.

Practise on Berachain Bepolia

Switch on Testnet mode in Keylo's Settings and Berachain Bepolia appears next to mainnet. It uses the same 0x address and free test BERA from a faucet, so you can try sends and fee speeds without risk. Test tokens cannot be converted into real BERA, and anyone selling testnet coins or promising airdrops for buying them is running a scam.

Berachain safety tips

  • Remember that BGT is non-transferable. Offers to buy, sell or send it are scams.
  • Check HONEY and other token contracts on the explorer; copycat tokens with bear-themed names are common.
  • Be careful with unlimited approvals to vaults and DEXs, and revoke ones you no longer use.
  • Pick the Berachain network on exchanges, and test with a small amount first.
  • Keep your recovery phrase offline. How Keylo protects your funds explains the protections available.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication and set an anti-phishing code.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send BGT to another wallet?

No. BGT is non-transferable by design. It is earned through Berachain reward vaults and can be used for governance, delegated to validators to direct emissions, or burned 1:1 for BERA. Burning is one-way, so BERA cannot be turned back into BGT. Any token called BGT that trades freely is not the real thing.

What do I need BERA for?

BERA pays gas for every transaction on Berachain, including sending HONEY or other tokens, and validators stake it to produce blocks. Without a little BERA in your wallet you cannot move anything else. Keylo shows BERA as the native balance for your Berachain address.

Is HONEY the same as USDC?

No. HONEY is Berachain's own stablecoin, minted against approved collateral such as USDC and designed to track the US dollar. It is a separate token with its own contract and its own risks. Check the contract address on the explorer before trading anything labelled HONEY.

How fast is Berachain?

Berachain produces a block about every two seconds, and a block is final as soon as it is committed, with no later reorganisation. A send in Keylo usually confirms within a few seconds. Exchanges and bridges can add their own processing time on top.

Can I earn Proof of Liquidity rewards with Keylo?

Not directly. Keylo holds, sends, swaps and bridges BERA and tokens, but it does not deposit into reward vaults or manage BGT. Earning PoL rewards requires using Berachain apps that support reward vaults, so read how each app works and what risks its pools carry before depositing.
