Gnosis Chain Wallet: Pay Gas in xDAI, Send and Swap Safely

Updated , 8 minute read

A Gnosis Chain wallet holds xDAI, the dollar-pegged coin that pays gas on Gnosis, plus tokens like GNO, EURe and USDC.e on a normal 0x address. Keylo creates the wallet in your browser and signs every transaction locally. Because fees are paid in a stablecoin, costs are predictable, but you still need a little xDAI before you can move any token.

What is Gnosis Chain?

Gnosis Chain is an EVM layer 1 that started life in 2018 as the xDai chain and merged with the Gnosis ecosystem. It runs the same consensus design as Ethereum: a beacon chain of proof-of-stake validators, with an execution layer that speaks the EVM. Slots are about five seconds, and the network went through its own version of the Merge in late 2022.

Two tokens matter. GNO secures the network: running a validator takes just 1 GNO, which keeps the hardware and capital needed to take part low, so many people run validators at home. xDAI pays for gas. It is a stablecoin worth about one US dollar, created when dollar stablecoins are bridged from Ethereum, so fees on Gnosis are quoted in something close to cents rather than a volatile coin.

People use Gnosis for payments and everyday finance. Gnosis Pay lets you spend stablecoins from a Gnosis Chain account with a Visa debit card, the Safe multisig wallet began in the Gnosis ecosystem, and projects like Circles and prediction markets run here because transactions are cheap and predictable.

Gnosis addresses and why you need xDAI first

Your Gnosis Chain address is a regular 0x address, identical to your Keylo address on Ethereum and other EVM networks. There is no activation step and no memo. Many Gnosis users also hold a Safe smart account, which has its own 0x address created by a contract; Keylo's address is a normal account controlled by your recovery phrase.

The catch is gas. Every transaction, including sending EURe or GNO, must pay its fee in xDAI. A wallet holding only tokens is stuck until some xDAI arrives. When you first move funds to Gnosis, bring a small amount of xDAI, or make sure a swap or bridge leaves you with some, before relying on the chain for payments.

Moving funds out of a Safe into Keylo is just a transfer from the Safe to your Keylo address, approved by the Safe's owners in the Safe app. Going the other way, from Keylo to a Safe, is an ordinary send. Keylo will show a contract warning when the recipient is a Safe, which is expected; it is there to stop you sending to contracts by accident, not to block deliberate payments.

How to create a Gnosis wallet with Keylo

Keylo never sees your password, phrase or keys; its servers hold only the encrypted wallet, so Keylo cannot move or recover your funds. You can import an existing 12- or 24-word phrase from MetaMask or similar wallets, which use the same Ethereum path. A Safe smart account cannot be imported this way, because it is a contract controlled by its owners rather than an address derived from a phrase.

  1. 1

Visit create a wallet in a modern browser on phone, tablet or desktop.

  2. 2

Register with your name, email, phone number and a strong password, then confirm your email.

  3. 3

Keylo generates a 12-word recovery phrase in your browser and encrypts it locally.

  4. 4

Open Gnosis in your network list. Your xDAI balance and 0x address appear there.

  5. 5

In Settings, re-enter your password, reveal the phrase and write it on paper kept offline.

How to receive xDAI and tokens

Gnosis blocks arrive about every five seconds, and the chain reaches full finality after a couple of minutes, in the same way Ethereum finalises in epochs. Most services credit deposits well before that. Large transfers from bridges or exchanges may wait for finality, which explains a short delay even when the transaction is already visible in the explorer.

  1. 1

Open xDAI on Gnosis and tap Receive.

  2. 2

Copy the 0x address or show the QR code. Keylo labels it Gnosis.

  3. 3

On the exchange or wallet sending funds, choose the Gnosis Chain network, sometimes listed as xDAI or Gnosis.

  4. 4

Watch Activity. The transfer appears within a few seconds and links to the Gnosis explorer.

How to send xDAI or tokens

Topping up a Gnosis Pay card means sending a supported token, such as EURe, GBPe or USDC.e, to your Gnosis Pay account address on Gnosis Chain. Gnosis Pay warns that unsupported tokens, or funds sent from other chains, can be lost, so check which tokens your card accepts before sending. The contract warning in Keylo is expected here, because Gnosis Pay accounts are Safe contracts.

  1. 1

Open xDAI or a Gnosis token and tap Send.

  2. 2

Paste or scan the recipient's 0x address. Keylo validates the checksum and flags contract addresses.

  3. 3

Enter the amount or use Max, which leaves enough xDAI for the fee.

  4. 4

Choose slow, normal or fast, then review the exact amount and the fee in xDAI.

  5. 5

Confirm to sign in the browser and broadcast.

Gas fees on Gnosis: priced in a stablecoin

Gnosis uses the EIP-1559 fee model with a base fee and a priority tip, just like Ethereum, but the fee is paid in xDAI. Because xDAI tracks the dollar, a transfer that uses 21,000 gas costs a tiny, predictable amount of dollars, usually a fraction of a cent. That stability is why many payment apps choose Gnosis.

Keylo's slow, normal and fast options adjust the tip and fee cap, and with five-second blocks the faster option mainly helps during busy moments. The review screen shows the fee in xDAI before you sign, and Keylo adds no fee of its own. Validators earn the tips, while the base fee is not paid to them.

Tokens on Gnosis: GNO, EURe, USDC.e and sDAI

Most Gnosis tokens are bridged from Ethereum through the Omnibridge, so they carry the same names as on Ethereum but live at different contract addresses. USDC.e is bridged USDC that follows Circle's Bridged USDC Standard. EURe and GBPe are euro and pound tokens issued by Monerium, a regulated e-money issuer, and are popular for card and IBAN payments. sDAI is a savings token for xDAI.

GNO is the staking token. You can hold and send it in Keylo like any token, but Keylo does not stake it; staking means running a validator with at least 1 GNO or using a liquid staking service, each with its own risks. Holding GNO does not give you gas, so you still need xDAI to move it.

Wrapped xDAI (WXDAI) is the ERC-20 version of the gas coin that DEXs use. Always confirm a token's contract on the Gnosis explorer before trading, because copies of popular tokens with identical symbols exist on every EVM chain, Gnosis included.

Swap or bridge xDAI

Gnosis swaps and bridges in Keylo are routed by LI.FI, which weighs DEX prices against bridge options. Useful moves here include converting xDAI to EURe for a card top-up, buying GNO, or bringing USDC across from Ethereum or Base. Each quote spells out the path, the amount you can expect, the minimum you will accept and all fees, with any small Keylo service fee listed. The swap and bridge page explains the routing.

If you use the native xDAI bridge directly instead, deposits from Ethereum arrive quickly, but withdrawals back to Ethereum need a separate claim transaction on Ethereum, paid in ETH, before the stablecoins are released. Routes taken through Keylo stay visible in the app until they complete, and a route that cannot finish is refunded by the protocol to your Gnosis address.

A common pattern for card users is to bridge stablecoins from another chain into USDC.e or xDAI on Gnosis, then swap part of it into EURe or GBPe before topping up. Doing it in two steps lets you check each quote and keep some xDAI back for gas, rather than ending up with only card tokens and no way to pay the next fee.

Gnosis safety tips

  • Keep some xDAI for gas; without it you cannot move any token.
  • Check which tokens your Gnosis Pay card accepts before topping it up.
  • Verify EURe, USDC.e and GNO contracts on the explorer before trading.
  • Choose the Gnosis network, not Ethereum, when withdrawing xDAI from an exchange.
  • Never share your recovery phrase. Keylo staff never ask for it, and support can help without it.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication and an anti-phishing code for Keylo emails.

Frequently asked questions

What is xDAI?

xDAI is the native gas coin of Gnosis Chain. It is a stablecoin worth about one US dollar, minted when dollar stablecoins are bridged from Ethereum through the xDAI bridge and burned when they are bridged back. Because gas is paid in xDAI, transaction costs on Gnosis stay stable in dollar terms.

Do I need GNO to use Gnosis Chain?

No. GNO is the staking token that validators use to secure the network, with 1 GNO per validator. To send transactions you need xDAI, which pays gas. You can hold GNO in Keylo as a token, but it does not pay fees.

Can I top up my Gnosis Pay card from Keylo?

You can send supported tokens such as EURe, GBPe or USDC.e to your Gnosis Pay account address on Gnosis Chain. Check the tokens your card supports first, because Gnosis Pay warns that unsupported tokens or funds from other chains can be lost. Keylo does not manage the card itself.

How long do Gnosis transactions take?

Blocks arrive about every five seconds, so a send usually confirms within seconds of you pressing confirm. Full finality takes a few minutes, because Gnosis finalises in epochs like Ethereum. Exchanges and bridges may wait for finality before crediting larger deposits, which is why an incoming transfer can look settled on the explorer before the service counts it.

Is xDAI the same as DAI?

Not exactly. xDAI on Gnosis is backed by stablecoins locked in the xDAI bridge on Ethereum, originally DAI and now USDS, and it can be bridged back. On Ethereum, DAI and USDS are ERC-20 tokens. They track the same dollar value but live on different chains, so pick the right network when moving them.
